Wahroonga Electorate Public Speaking Competition
Mr ALISTER HENSKENS (Wahroonga) (16:32): Each year in Parliament, I host a public speaking competition for local public schools in the Wahroonga electorate. Students from Gordon West, Normanhurst, Pymble, Thornleigh West, Turramurra, Wahroonga, Waitara, Warrawee and West Pymble Public Schools were asked in the last competition to prepare speeches answering the question, "What does it mean to be a creative country in a world increasingly challenged by artificial intelligence?" Each student prepared a unique speech, debating the positive and negative aspects of artificial intelligence in our world. Students were then asked to prepare impromptu speeches with the prompt "I should have listened". The students rose to the challenge, and each put their own spin on the prompt. Some told stories of the times they wished they had listened to their parents or teachers before going on to make a mistake, while others highlighted the importance of listening to those around us in order to make real change in the world. The students were insightful, and the judges had an incredibly difficult job deciding the winner. I look forward to hosting the competition again this year.
