Lunar New Year

Alister at the Lunar New Year markets

Mr ALISTER HENSKENS (Wahroonga) (15:47): I wish everyone a happy Lunar New Year as we celebrate the Year of the Snake. People born in this year are said to be courageous, confident and dynamic, which are traits that we can all aspire to. This celebration is deeply rooted in history and tradition. It brings people together in unity, love and gratitude, which are qualities that are sometimes lacking here on Macquarie Street. Some of the customs surrounding Lunar New Year include families reuniting, preparing meals, lighting fireworks, handing out red envelopes of money and offering prayers for good health and prosperity. I had a wonderful time attending the St Ives Lunar New Year Markets at the St Ives Village Green. The markets had carnival rides and plenty of food stalls to keep children and adults happy. I joined the mayor and councillors for the "walking of the lions" ritual. This ritual is about empowering the lion to fulfil its duty of bringing protection, good luck, health and prosperity to the Ku-ring-gai community.
